Kakuro Puzzle Rules and Solving Strategies
Kakuro puzzle rules are based on sums and deduction. Fill each run of white cells to match its clue, using digits 1 to 9 without repeating a digit in a run.

Across and down clues
Inside black cells, one clue applies to the across run and the other to the down run. Follow the direction carefully before writing.
A run ends at the next black cell or the grid edge.
No repeated digits
To make 4 in two cells, 2+2 is forbidden, leaving only 1+3. To make 6 in three cells, 1+2+3 is forced. This rule quickly narrows possibilities.
Repetition is forbidden only within the run in question.
Kakuro solving strategies, step by step
Look for short runs with very low or high totals. Write their combinations, then compare them with the runs crossing each cell.
A cell keeps only digits shared by its horizontal and vertical possibilities.
Verify without guessing
Before placing a digit, check the remaining sum, empty-cell count and digits already used. If several choices remain, keep them as candidates.
A unique-solution grid can be resolved through consistent restrictions without random trials.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Which digits are used?
The digits 1 through 9.
Is zero allowed?
No, not in white cells of a standard Kakuro.
Can two runs share a digit?
Yes. The no-repeat rule applies separately to each run.
What are the rules of a Kakuro puzzle?
Each run must match its clue sum using digits 1 to 9 without repetition. The intersections between across and down runs help you deduce each digit.
