KAKURO GUIDE

Kakuro: rules, combinations and puzzle books for adults

Kakuro resembles a numerical crossword. Each run of cells must reach its clue sum using digits 1 to 9, with no repeated digit inside that run.

Read the grid

A black cell may hold two clues: the sum to its right and the sum below. White cells receive digits. Each run applies its own no-repeat rule.

A cell usually belongs to one horizontal and one vertical run; their crossing creates the deduction.

Essential combinations

A total of 3 across two cells forces 1 and 2; a total of 17 forces 8 and 9. Sums near the minimum or maximum have few combinations and make good starting points.

Crossings still determine the order of those digits.

Solving method

List combinations for constrained runs, then intersect horizontal and vertical candidates in each cell. Remove a combination whenever it repeats a digit or conflicts with a crossing.

Place a digit only when certain. Arithmetic supplies possibilities; logic determines positions.
