What “extreme” actually means
There is no universal rating scale shared by every publisher. Two puzzles with the same label can feel very different. A credible rating reflects the techniques and depth of reasoning required, not clue count alone.
A well-built extreme grid has one solution. Progress may be slow, but a logical next step still exists.
Before advanced patterns
Run a complete scan for naked singles, hidden singles, pairs, triples and locked candidates. Many apparent dead ends begin with a missed candidate update.
Keep pencil marks tidy. They act as external memory and prevent you from rebuilding the same reasoning on every pass.
Useful techniques
Locked candidates use the alignment of a digit within a box. Naked and hidden subsets clear competing marks. X-Wings compare two rows with two columns. Candidate chains alternate logical states without turning the solve into a guess.
Recognizing one technique reliably is more useful than memorizing many names. After every elimination, scan again for simple placements.
Train at a consistent level
